What holds the world together

The quest for answers

Science - even if we cannot absolve ourselves of a certain bias here, sonares owes its genesis to it - is the best thing that could have happened to mankind.

Certainly, no one denies its importance, but just how significant it was and is for our development only really becomes clear when you take a step back and look at the "big picture".

The driving force behind human history

The fact that man has at some point decided to abandon the belief in simple causalities, to venture into the great expanse far beyond the horizon of human imagination with his questions, to search for answers there, to uncover connections, to trace parallel threads back to their points of connection, makes science one of the greatest, if not the greatest factor that has driven us further and further towards the future over centuries, even millennia, like a constantly running engine.

Accordingly, science has not only driven the development of societies to the state we know today, and basically, as the driving force behind the progress of our civilization, made it possible in the first place - it has also spurred human ambition not to rest on the belief that we are the crowning glory of creation, to see the supposed last step of the evolutionary ladder as the end of the line, but rather as an intermediate stage. It has spurred us on to go further and further; it has fostered a kind of glutton's mentality in the most positive sense, to which we owe the fact that the world of today exists and - if we continue to think about it - will no longer exist in its current form in fifty to a hundred years' time, but will reveal a completely new picture of itself to future generations that is still unknown to us today.

We're only at the beginning

Scientific studies, regardless of their subject, are always based on the desire to produce results and thus knowledge. No scientist who feels committed to the principles of research and teaching conducts research for the sake of research without the desire that this will at some point bring him closer to the answer to a question that is driving him, if not clarify the question in its entirety. Studies take on a wide variety of topics, address problems and often bring to light further, previously unknown follow-up questions, making them a kind of perpetuum mobile of information gathering and thus knowledge discovery.

It is astonishing, and at the same time the most blissful realization of all, that although we have already experienced, discovered, explored, investigated and studied so much, we have probably only removed the uppermost of the countless layers under which we believe the answers to the riddles of our universe are buried. Science will continue to accompany us energetically and tirelessly on this most fascinating of excavation sites and this certainty should allow us all to look to the future with confidence, anticipation and unbridled curiosity.
