ScienceFacts: On the way to more accessibility

Scientific facts - Accessible for all

We want our smart computing tools to be accessible to as many people as possible. That's why we have specifically optimized them for accessibility and user-friendliness. One example is our new design: revised color combinations ensure that texts and interactive elements are also easy to read for people with impaired vision or increased color sensitivity. Our goal: a design that is both functional and appealing.

Sharing knowledge means more than just publishing content It also means designing them in such a way that as many people as possible benefit from them - regardless of their individual circumstances or limitations.

Careful tests for Real improvements

All applications were carefully tested - using various test tools, manual screen reader checks and with a particular focus on complete usability via keyboard. We identified weaknesses that could make it difficult to use, especially for people with assistive technologies or keyboard-based navigation. We take concrete measures to ensure that barriers are removed and accessibility is improved in the long term.

First steps at central locations

The most frequently used components of ScienceFacts were our top priority. We have implemented the following measures, which are based on the WCAG 2.2 guidelines. These measures help to increase the accessibility of ScienceFacts and create a more inclusive user experience.

Contrasts optimized:
We ensure that texts and backgrounds have a sufficient contrast ratio (at least 4.5:1) - in accordance with success criterion 1.4.3. This improves readability for all users.

Alternative texts added
All relevant images and graphics contain concise alternative texts that describe the content in the respective context. We therefore fulfill success criterion 1.1.1.

Keyboard operability ensured:
All interactive elements can be operated entirely by keyboard - in accordance with success criterion 2.1.1.

Focus indicators improved:
The visible focus is clearly highlighted for interactive elements. This makes navigation easier for keyboard users in accordance with success criterion 2.4.7.

Semantic structure reinforced:
We improve the semantic structure of page content through the targeted use of ARIA roles and labels. This supports assistive technologies in interpretation and navigation - especially in terms of success criterion 4.1.2.

Accessibility as a realistic interim goal

We know: Complete accessibility is a complex challenge - especially for interactive, data-based applications such as ScienceFacts. That's why we are initially aiming for low accessibility. Our aim is to gradually remove barriers and create alternative access points where technically and creatively possible. This pragmatic approach helps us to continuously improve.

We still see potential for use with screen readers in particular. Some complex content requires further adaptations in order to be just as accessible audibly as visually. We are working on this - with a clear plan and already defined next steps.

Accessibility is not an additional expense for us, but an expression of our attitude: Anyone who wants to make science accessible must also break down digital barriers.

Accessibility is a process

For us, accessibility is not a completed milestone, but an ongoing part of our product development. We learn with every new iteration - technically, creatively and in dialog with our users. For us, good digital design naturally includes accessibility.
